Sprite Sheet Template — RPG Maker, 4/8-Direction & Custom Grids

A sprite sheet template is an empty grid sized to your frames, so every drawing lands in the right cell. Choose a preset — RPG Maker MZ/MV 48×48 3×4, 4-direction or 8-direction walk, platformer set — or set your own frame size and grid, then download a transparent PNG to draw on.

Choosing the Right Sprite Sheet Layout

Starting a sprite sheet on an empty grid saves a lot of fixing later: frames line up, sizes stay consistent, and the sheet imports into your engine without manual slicing. The right template depends on your game's perspective and engine.

RPG Maker MZ and MV characters use 48×48 frames in a 3×4 block — three walking frames (step, stand, step) for each of four directions in the order down, left, right, up. VX Ace uses the same layout at 32×32. Top-down games outside RPG Maker often use four frames per direction (4×4), and games with diagonal movement use eight directions.

Side-scrollers usually keep one animation per row: idle, run, jump and attack, each with 6–8 frames. Pick a frame size with some headroom for weapons and effects; you can't easily make a frame bigger once the animation is drawn.

Prefer to skip drawing? Upload a character to Spritesheets.ai and generate the animations, then use these grids to arrange them in any engine's format.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is an RPG Maker MZ sprite sheet?

One character is 144×192 px: 3 frames × 4 directions at 48×48 px. A standard file holds 8 characters in a 4×2 arrangement (576×384 px); prefix the filename with $ for a single-character file.

What is a good sprite sheet size for pixel art?

Use frames of 16×16, 32×32 or 64×64 px with 6–8 frames per animation row. Keep all frames the same size so your engine can slice the sheet automatically.

How many frames should a walk cycle have?

Pixel art walk cycles commonly use 4–8 frames; smoother HD walks use 8–12. RPG Maker uses 3 per direction.

Can I use these templates commercially?

Yes. The templates are blank grids — use them for any project.

Which programs can open the template?

Any image editor with layers: Aseprite, Photoshop, Krita, GIMP, Piskel, Pixelorama or Procreate. Draw on a layer above the grid and hide the grid before exporting.
