01How RPG Character Sprite Sheets Work
Top-down and JRPG-style games show characters from above, walking in four (sometimes eight) directions. Their sprite sheets are organised by direction: one row per facing, and a few frames per row that loop as the character walks. RPG Maker popularised a compact standard — three frames per direction (step, stand, step) and four rows ordered down, left, right, up.
In RPG Maker MZ and MV each frame is 48×48 pixels, so a single character block is 144×192 px. A standard character file contains eight characters (four across, two down) for a 576×384 image; prefixing the filename with $ tells the engine the file contains just one character. Older versions differ: VX and VX Ace use 32×32 frames, and RPG Maker XP uses four frames per direction.
Spritesheets.ai speeds up the slowest part of this — drawing the character consistently from every side and animating each direction. Generate or upload your hero, generate walk cycles facing each direction, and export the frames. Our free Sprite Sheet Template tool includes an RPG Maker 3×4 grid you can use to place the frames, and the same output works for Godot, Unity, GameMaker and Phaser top-down games, which accept any grid layout.
Beyond walking, RPG battles need idle, attack, cast, hurt and victory poses. Generate those from the same character so your overworld sprite and battler stay on-model.
