Why Convert a GIF to a Sprite Sheet?

GIFs are great for sharing animations, but game engines don't play them. Unity, Godot, GameMaker, Phaser and most 2D frameworks expect animation frames packed into a single image — a sprite sheet — plus information about where each frame sits. Converting a GIF to a sprite sheet is the quickest way to get an animation you found, made or recorded into a game.

A GIF frame is often stored as a partial update on top of the previous frame. This tool rebuilds each full frame (respecting the GIF's disposal method) before placing it on the sheet, so you don't get smeared or half-drawn frames — a common problem with naive converters.

Pick a grid for compact sheets, or a single-row strip if your engine imports strips (GameMaker's Import Strip Image, for example). The JSON atlas uses the widely supported TexturePacker "hash" format, including each frame's original GIF delay, so you can reproduce the timing in your engine.

Don't have an animation yet? Spritesheets.ai can generate one from a single character image — walk, idle, run or attack — and export the sprite sheet directly.

  • Correct frame compositing (GIF disposal methods handled)
  • Grid, strip or column layouts with optional padding
  • Frame durations preserved in the JSON atlas
  • 100% client-side — your files never leave your device

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a GIF into a sprite sheet?

Upload the GIF to the converter above, choose a grid or strip layout, and click Download. You get a PNG containing every frame and an optional JSON file describing each frame's position and duration.

Is this GIF to sprite sheet converter free?

Yes. It's free with no signup and no watermark, and it runs entirely in your browser.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The GIF is decoded and the sprite sheet is built locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Can I import the result into Unity or Godot?

Yes. In Unity, set Sprite Mode to Multiple and slice by cell size; in Godot, use Add Frames from Sprite Sheet on a SpriteFrames resource and enter the grid size shown under the preview.

Why do some GIF frames look broken in other converters?

Many GIFs only store the pixels that change between frames. If a converter doesn't rebuild the full frame, you get partial frames. This tool composites each frame correctly before placing it on the sheet.

Can I convert a video or MP4 to a sprite sheet?

Convert the video to a GIF first, then use this tool — or upload a single character image to Spritesheets.ai and generate a clean sprite animation directly.

Need a Sprite Animation in the First Place?

Upload one character image and Spritesheets.ai generates walk, idle, run and attack sprite sheets for you.
