4-Direction vs 8-Direction Sprites (and the RPG Maker Format)

4-direction or 8-direction sprites for a top-down game? Art cost, feel and engine setup compared, plus the RPG Maker MZ/MV 3×4 format explained.

Top-down and isometric characters must be drawn facing several directions. The choice between four and eight directions affects your art budget, how movement feels, and how you set up animation in the engine.

014-Direction Sprites

Down, left, right and up. This is the classic JRPG and Zelda-like setup. Left is often a mirrored copy of right, so you only draw three unique directions.

  • Pros: half the art of 8-direction; reads clearly on grid-based maps; matches RPG Maker.
  • Cons: diagonal movement shows the character facing sideways or up/down, which can look stiff in free-movement games.

028-Direction Sprites

Adds the four diagonals. Common in action RPGs, twin-stick shooters and isometric games where players move freely.

  • Pros: smooth, natural-looking free movement; essential for isometric views.
  • Cons: roughly double the frames — five unique directions if you mirror three of them.

03The RPG Maker MZ / MV Character Format

RPG Maker uses a compact 4-direction format: 3 frames per direction (left step, standing, right step) and 4 rows in the order down, left, right, up. MZ and MV use 48×48 px frames, so one character block is 144×192 px. A standard character file contains 8 characters arranged 4 across and 2 down (576×384 px); put a $ at the start of the filename to make a file that contains a single character. VX and VX Ace use the same layout at 32×32 px.

The free Sprite Sheet Template tool has RPG Maker MZ/MV and VX Ace presets, and the RPG Sprite Sheet Generator covers generating the directional walk cycles.

04Engine Setup

  • Godot 4: one AnimatedSprite2D with walk_down, walk_left, walk_right, walk_up (plus diagonals for 8-dir); pick the animation from the movement vector's angle.
  • Unity: one clip per direction and a 2D Blend Tree driven by MoveX / MoveY parameters.
  • GameMaker: one sprite per direction, chosen in the Step event from the direction variable rounded to 90° or 45°.

05Which Should You Pick?

Choose 4 directions for grid-based or tile-locked movement, RPG Maker projects, and small teams. Choose 8 directions for free analogue movement, isometric games, and action combat where facing matters. If art time is the constraint, AI generation makes 8 directions far cheaper: generate the character once, then each facing's walk cycle with Spritesheets.ai.
